Virtual Computer Now Part of Citrix Systems

NxTop IDV

Virtual Computer is now part of Citrix, and NxTop provides a preview into the future of XenClient Enterprise. Explore Citrix XenClient and discover how it enables "VDI to go".

NxTop is an IDV (Intelligent Desktop Virtualization) suite, which combines Client-Hosted VDI with centralized management, making managing thousands of desktops as easy as managing one. The first product in the industry to combine centralized management with a Type-1 client hypervisor, NxTop offers IT professionals with full control over the endpoint device, gives users new levels of flexibility, and slashes costs at the same time.

Central Management, Distributed Execution

IT executives are beginning to see tremendous potential for lowering operational costs and reducing security risk through IDV. Yet adoption has been slow as IT teams struggle to justify the economics of large data center investments and accurately predict how many of their users can be addressed by server-based virtual desktops versus traditional PCs. Central desktop management has its advantages, but can it return on its investment?

NxTop Architecture

By distributing the deployment model (while retaining central management) to take advantage of remote servers and deploying the hypervisor locally on the desktop, NxTop customers can reduce their operational costs in half without sacrificing control, mobility or end-user computing experience, even in bandwidth-constrained environments. Further, network traffic is greatly reduced because it now only needs to communicate changes. Backups are efficient and non-intrusive because only the user data is backed up, not the entire image.

Better Experience for Both IT Manager and End User

NxTop is easy to install and maintain. A typical installation can be up and running in less than an hour. Central, policy-based user profiles and virtual machine image definitions let IT managers update once, test in isolation, and deploy automatically, which means the change process is also safe, simple and efficient.

Best of all, the management and security benefits of NxTop do not come at the expense of end-user experience. Users have the same rich computing experience they are accustomed to. Better even. NxTop offers NxTop Connect, a quick-booting (in seconds) embedded virtual appliance that provides seamless access to server- and cloud-based applications and server-hosted desktops from all major VDI vendors. Pre-loaded applications include Google Chrome, Skype, and RDP client. NxTop Connect can run standalone on the desktop as thin client or alongside locally executing virtual machines.

One Platform, Any Environment

The desktop virtualization market is confusing. IT often must invest in several products to address the needs of all its users: stationary, mobile, workstation, power user, the list goes on. With the advent of BYOPC (bring your own PC) policies and cloud computing, the chaos can only increase.

NxTop brings clarity to the market with a single, adaptive platform that scales to meet the most demanding computing needs from one user to a global enterprise. A single managed infrastructure of PCs will support any combination of local desktops, remote VDI sessions, and server- and cloud-based applications. IT departments can enable end-users to create their own personal virtual machines that run alongside corporate virtual machines with full isolation, for instance against viruses and malware.

Finally, NxTop offers the broadest PC configuration and peripheral support in the industry (click here for a full list). IT no longer has to delay adoption for users who have not yet upgraded to the “approved” platform of the virtualization system.

NxTop highlights and benefits:

  • Distributed desktop virtualization puts desktop virtualization on the local desktop and laptop, avoiding the need for major data center and network upgrades.
  • Central management architecture (patent pending) turns high friction IT activities such as operating system deployment and patching into simple, efficient, one-to-many operations. Users are provisioned faster and easier from a shared central image, and updates are efficient and failsafe.
  • Full hardware abstraction from the operating system means simple, efficient migration from any desktop to desktop configuration without any driver issues.
  • Seamless integration with complementary server-based desktop and application delivery products protects investment by supporting any desktop model and avoiding thin client lock-in.
  • Full protection and control through layered security, integrated disk encryption, and hardware-independent images make lost, stolen, or damaged PCs a non-event for IT and the end-user. Machines can survive catastrophic operating system issues, including the familiar "blue screen of death."
  • Policy-based incremental backups of user data make the process fast, reliable, and non-disruptive allowing end-users can take snapshots far more frequently.
  • Multi-VM support turns existing PCs into multi-OS workstations, supporting a variety of new use cases that simply are not possible with native PCs.
  • Comprehensive hardware support brings new life to old PCs. Organizations can update their platforms at their own pace, not that of the virtualization platform. Also, as use cases arise that require multiple operating system instances, they can be run securely on a single PC. Malware in one desktop cannot permeate others on the device.

Podio Now Part of Citrix Systems

11.04.12 Posted in Featured,Us by

Three years ago, when Podio was just an idea and few early lines of code, our founders’ ambition was to change the way people work. We had experienced, firsthand, the way work tools were broken and how people had been disenfranchised from choosing the way they wanted to work.

Today, we want to welcome you to the next phase of the journey with us as we become a part of the Citrix family. The exciting news is that Citrix has acquired Podio and now we’ll continue, as one company, revolutionizing the human experience of getting work done at an even greater speed. See the official announcement here.

Podio was born out of the desire to give power back to the people doing the real work of companies. We wanted to design a platform that would empower people like you to build the tools you needed to get your work done, so you could work faster, better and more collaboratively with the people in your team. We wanted to build the work platform — something you could open in the morning and close in the evening; where you could manage all your work under one roof.

Citrix is an innovative company that makes a lot of products which already support the new ways people are working today. Importantly, Citrix has had the foresight to take real leaps forward with technology and in doing so, unflinchingly accept and respond to the sweeping changes taking place in workplaces all over the world. With a history of bringing new technologies to market, like GoToMeeting, GoToMyPC and Sharefile, Citrix has proven itself a trailblazer and a business leader for more than 20 years. Citrix and Podio share not just common values but a common vision for the future of work. It’s that inherent alignment in philosophy, which made this agreement possible.

When we launched Podio out of beta a year ago, you met us with excitement, applause and a genuine willingness to try something dramatically different from what had come before. A new way of working — that really worked! Since then, tens of thousands of organizations in 170 different countries have joined us on the journey towards the future of work. You’ve built thousands of your own apps, creating thousands of individualized ways to manage the unique work that you do. You’ve shown us how to use Podio in more ways than we could ever have dreamed up. You’ve also shown us that the world is ready for what Podio has to offer.

So, what’s the really obvious good news? Well, because Podio is now part of Citrix, we will have far more resources to draw on and a much bigger platform on which to build better work tools for everyone! While this is a really big step forward for Podio, you won’t notice any changes. After today, we’ll hush up about it and our teams in Copenhagen and San Francisco will continue building the world’s best work platform and delivering the world’s best support to you, our users who helped get us this far. We are excited to continue the Podio journey with you.

Citrix Accelerates Cloud Data Strategy with Acquisition of ShareFile

Market Leading Provider of Secure, Cloud-Based Document Sharing to Form Foundation of Citrix “Follow-Me-Data” Platform

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 13, 2011 — Citrix Systems today announced it has completed the acquisition of ShareFile1, a market leading provider of secure, cloud-based data storage, sharing and collaboration. The ShareFile product line makes it easy for businesses of all sizes to securely store, sync and share business documents and files, both inside and outside the company. ShareFile’s centralized cloud storage capability also allows users to share files across multiple devices and access them from any location. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

From Personal Computers to Personal Clouds

In the PC Era, data was typically stored on a single personal computer, accessed from a physical office, and shared via flash drives or email. As the industry transitions to the Cloud Era, an increasingly mobile workforce is demanding easy access to data that is untethered from offices and devices, and easy to share and collaborate securely with others. These trends are giving rise to the concept of a “personal cloud” – the aggregation of apps, data, preferences and friends that are unique to each individual employee, and move seamlessly across any device or location.

Based on industry estimates, Citrix expects the personal cloud market to be a multi-billion dollar opportunity by 2015, fueled by trends such as cloud computing, faster bandwidth, email limitations and the consumerization of IT. Citrix is leading the charge to empower these users, delivering “follow-me-desktops” and “follow-me-apps” to more than 100 million people every day, across a wide variety of business and consumer devices. With the acquisition of ShareFile, Citrix is adding “follow-me-data” capabilities to its portfolio, allowing business users to access their documents and files from anywhere, share them across multiple devices and collaborate easily with colleagues.

Citrix Cloud Data Strategy

The acquisition of ShareFile brings Citrix a powerful new technology platform, and a talented team with deep experience in data services and cloud computing. ShareFile CEO, Jesse Lipson, will become Vice President and General Manager of the newly-formed Data Sharing product group at Citrix. This group will be responsible for the ShareFile product line, as well as enabling the Citrix “follow-me-data” strategy. Taking a platform approach to data will enable Citrix to:

  • Make common data services like search, share, sync, secure, authenticate, open and preview available to a wide range of applications, services and use cases through a set of open APIs.
  • Extend secure data sharing services to new and existing apps stored in public and private clouds and accessed from millions of different business and consumer devices.
  • Connect data seamlessly into the way people collaborate today, ensuring that the right documents and files are always accessible when needed, and always up to date.

Citrix Synergy Barcelona

Citrix will reveal more of its plans for ShareFile and the follow-me-data platform strategy at Citrix Synergy™ Barcelona, October 26-28.

Quotes

Mark Templeton, President and CEO, Citrix Systems, Inc.

“This is a highly strategic acquisition that enables Citrix to deliver all three of the critical components for the personal cloud – collaboration, apps and data – with amazing accessibility and productivity on any device. Our follow-me-data strategy means data will be shared (1) across people, (2) across apps, and (3) across devices. As customers and partners build on this platform, they will be able to easily add follow-me-data services to their software, leverage the data that other apps store there, and instantly inherit all the management, mobility and scalability that’s in the ShareFile infrastructure.”

Jesse Lipson, CEO, ShareFile

“Joining the Citrix team will provide a great home to the thousands of ShareFile corporate customers, serving millions of users worldwide. The combination of Citrix and ShareFile will also help spur incredible new innovation around the role of data in the new Cloud Era workplace.”

Citrix Changes the Game in Cloud Infrastructure with Cloud.com Acquisition

Market Leading Cloud.com Platform Lets Customers Build Clouds the Way the World’s Most Successful Clouds Are Built

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — July 12, 2011 — Citrix Systems today announced it has completed the acquisition of Cloud.com, a market leading provider of software infrastructure platforms for cloud providers. The company’s innovative CloudStack™ product line helps providers of all types deploy and manage simple, cost-effective cloud services that are scalable, secure, and open by design. This acquisition further establishes Citrix as a leader in infrastructure for the rapidly growing cloud provider market. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The transition from the PC Era to the Cloud Era is expected to fuel a massive build out in cloud infrastructure, creating a new market projected to exceed $11 billion by the end of 2013, according to industry analysts[i]. This market will feature thousands of providers of all shapes and sizes, offering a vast array of new cloud services ranging from business, infrastructure and development offerings, to consumer, mobile and gaming services. Most of the clouds that service this market will look nothing like traditional enterprise datacenters. They will run on radically different platforms purpose-built for cloud computing – platforms designed from the ground up to deliver multi-tier, multi-tenant services in the simplest and most cost-effective way. The world’s largest and most successful public clouds are all built this way today.

The Cloud.com product line is not a traditional enterprise server virtualization platform with cloud management layered on top.  It is a powerful, hypervisor-agnostic solution designed from the ground up to help providers build clouds the way the world’s largest and most successful public clouds are built – simple, automated, elastic, scalable and efficient. This proven approach has helped Cloud.com customers around the world roll out new cloud services up to 50 times faster, at one fifth the cost of alternative solutions

With the addition of Cloud.com, Citrix now offers a complete portfolio of virtualization, orchestration and networking solutions purpose built for the Cloud Era – solutions that are not only among the market leaders individually, but also designed to help customers avoid vendor lock-in by letting them use the hardware, software, management products and service providers of their choice.

Citrix Commitment to Openness

A commitment to openness and interoperability has been a central pillar for both Citrix and Cloud.com, and will accelerate further with this acquisition. The Cloud.com product line will continue to support leading commercial hypervisors such as Citrix XenServer® and VMware vSphere, as well as open source hypervisors like Xen®. Citrix intends to add support for Microsoft products like Hyper-V and System Center to the Cloud.com product line, as well as support a full range of “platform-as-a-service” development environments, storage systems, servers and management software.

A key part of this commitment to openness is a full embrace of open source as an essential element of cloud computing.  In addition to providing leadership in communities like Xen.org at the virtualization layer, this acquisition will help Citrix further accelerate its support of OpenStack, the popular open source cloud infrastructure movement that now includes over 1,100 cloud developers, and more than 80 member companies.  As a founding member of Openstack.org, Citrix is the second largest contributor to the project and is a member of the OpenStack policy board.

Citrix product support for OpenStack was initially announced at the recent Citrix Synergy conference under the code name “Project Olympus.” With this acquisition, Citrix will also be extending OpenStack support to the Cloud.com product line in an upcoming release later this year.

Citrix Cloud Infrastructure Portfolio

With the addition of Cloud.com, the Citrix infrastructure portfolio for cloud providers will include:

Cloud Platform Products:

  • CloudStack (new) – next generation, hypervisor-agnostic, cloud infrastructure platform.
  • XenServer – secure, cloud-optimized virtualization platform

Cloud Networking Products:

  • NetScaler® Cloud Gateway – sits at the “front door” of corporate datacenters giving IT an easy, unified way to orchestrate the delivery of any mix of SaaS, web and Windows apps to end users on any device.
  • NetScaler Cloud Bridge – sits at the “back door” of corporate datacenters, giving IT unlimited capacity by seamlessly and securely extending any datacenter to any external cloud service, regardless of hypervisor or platform.
  • NetScaler SDX, MPX and VPX – powerful networking platforms designed from the ground up to serve as a “service delivery fabric” for virtual datacenters and clouds.

App and Desktop Products:

  • XenApp™ and XenDesktop® – market leading virtualization solutions that let cloud providers deliver Windows apps and desktops as a service to any device.

Citrix Cloud Platforms Product Group

The addition of Cloud.com brings Citrix an incredibly talented team that includes some of the world’s most experienced cloud computing experts. Cloud.com CEO Sheng Liang will continue to lead the design, architecture and technology of the CloudStack product line, reporting to Sameer Dholakia, group vice president and general manager of the newly-formed Cloud Platforms product group at Citrix.

Product Availability

The Cloud.com CloudStack solution is available to cloud providers today, with Citrix branded versions coming in a future release.

Quotes

Mark Templeton, President and CEO, Citrix Systems, Inc.

“As the industry moves into the Cloud Era, Citrix is committed to leading the charge with powerful solutions that make the cloud more open, more secure, and more personal. We are delighted to welcome the Cloud.com team to the Citrix family to focus our combined efforts on helping customers of all sizes make a difference in business, and in the lives of their customers and employees.”

Sheng Liang, CEO and Founder, Cloud.com

“Cloud.com is the platform behind many of the world’s most innovative and successful clouds. Joining forces with Citrix will dramatically accelerate our mission to help customers achieve all the promise cloud computing has to offer, in a way that’s open, secure and efficient.”

Jim Curry, GM of Cloud Builders, Rackspace

"Citrix has been a leader in the creation of OpenStack, assembling an impressive team of developers and creating Project Olympus to take open cloud-scale technology into the market.  With the addition of the Cloud.com team, Citrix is furthering their commitment to OpenStack, ensuring that the OpenStack platform and APIs are even more widely available to customers everywhere."
